Pension Fund
Fully funded C$132B defined-benefit plan for Ontario's healthcare workers, investing largely in-house from Toronto and London.
HOOPP is the defined-benefit pension plan for Ontario's hospital and community healthcare sector, with more than 504,000 members and 870+ participating employers. It manages C$132 billion (end-2025) through an in-house investment team that leans heavily on capital markets (fixed income, public equities, credit and derivatives) alongside private equity, infrastructure, real estate and private credit, with nearly half of assets invested in Canada. For students it hires from its Toronto head office at 1 York Street through co-op/internship work terms and an Investment Management Rotational Program for new graduates; a London office opened in 2024 supports European private-markets deal sourcing.

The larger share of the Fund (about 65% per the 2025 annual report chart). Programs include interest rates, cross-asset thematic investing, public equities, liquid and macro credit, structured and private credit, and balance-sheet and liquidity management. Public equities returned 22.2% in 2025 and drove the year's result.
Invests through funds, co-investments, secondaries and direct deals across buyouts, growth equity and venture capital (including the HOOPP Capital Partners venture program, e.g. Radical Ventures). Returned 3.6% in 2025. The London office supports European direct opportunities.
Teams in Toronto and London invest directly, through co-investments and through funds in core and core-plus assets in rule-of-law jurisdictions. The portfolio returned 1.8% in 2025, held back by one U.S. renewable power investment.
Mostly direct ownership and co-ownership of about 60 million sq. ft. across more than 270 properties in North America, Europe and Asia (industrial, office, retail, residential, student housing and life science). Returned 1.1% in 2025.
Run on a decentralized model, with loans made through the Infrastructure, Private Equity, Real Estate and Structured Credit teams via direct lending, fund commitments and co-investments. Returned 0.9% in 2025.
A central team under Sarah Takaki, Managing Director, Sustainable Investing, rather than a deal desk of its own: it gives the asset-class teams ESG insight, carries HOOPP's climate change strategy across the fund and runs portfolio stewardship, including proxy voting and engagement. Organised around three pillars — sustainable insights, sustainable opportunities and a sustainable portfolio. The 2023 climate plan commits HOOPP to net zero across the portfolio by 2050 and $23 billion of green investments by 2030.

Reasons that work in interviews
5 reasons for HOOPP
Not confined to one strategy: investing across the capital structure, debt and equity, LP and GP, which is a much wider education than a pure equity mandate.
Genuinely long holding periods, with returns compounded over a decade or more rather than a five-year exit assumption.
Hands-on with portfolio companies over long periods, including in co-invest, so the involvement is real rather than passive.
On the public side: long/short with activist work and a tactical ideas portfolio spanning convertible debt, PIPEs, systematic strategies and special situations, which almost no Canadian pension offers.
Reported as a welcoming team where seniors are accessible, and that is a specific claim you can test in your own calls.
