Penfund is a Toronto-based independent lender to private-equity-backed and other middle-market companies across North America. Founded in 1979 and bought by its management in 2000, it lends both junior capital (second lien, mezzanine and private high yield through Penfund Capital Fund VII) and senior and unitranche loans (through Penfund Prime, launched in 2024). It manages about C$3.6 billion and can hold up to C$300 million per deal. For Canadian candidates, it is a Bay Street credit shop whose team page shows Associates hired in 2023, 2025 and 2026, mostly after bank investment banking or corporate development analyst roles; its careers page listed no openings at retrieval.

Reasons that work in interviews
3 reasons for Penfund
Credit interviews test whether you think about downside first. The strongest framing is that you want to learn to underwrite what happens when a business underperforms, which equity investing never forces you to do properly. Then make it specific to their position in the capital structure.
One of the longest-running private credit firms in Canada, so the track record covers several credit cycles rather than the post-2010 expansion.
Junior and subordinated capital to mid-market companies, which sits in the most interesting part of the capital structure: senior enough to be protected, junior enough that the analysis matters.
Small team on North American transactions.

How juniors get in
Hires Associates after a few years as an investment banking, corporate development or deal advisory analyst; no undergraduate or new-graduate analyst roles on the investment team.
Green: evidence it does. Struck through: evidence it doesn’t. Dashed: no public evidence either way.
Each row is a start season; the bars are when you apply. The track starts this month, so how far right a bar sits is how far off it is.
