Private Equity
Calgary value-oriented oil and gas private equity firm behind Strathcona Resources and Greenfire Resources.
Waterous Energy Fund (WEF) is a Calgary private equity firm founded in January 2017 by Adam Waterous, formerly Scotiabank's global head of investment banking. It invests in Canadian oil and gas with a value approach, buying established, sub-scale assets and combining them into a few large companies rather than backing start-up teams. It has raised over C$3.4 billion across five fundraises, including a C$1.4 billion Fund III closed in March 2025. Its portfolio is concentrated in Strathcona Resources (TSX: SCR), built through about C$1.9 billion of equity, and Greenfire Resources (TSX/NYSE: GFR). The investment team is very small and has largely hired from energy teams at KKR, Blackstone, J.P. Morgan and Scotiabank.

Buys established, high-quality, geographically concentrated assets and combines them into scaled businesses, focusing on intrinsic value per share, a margin of safety and consolidation of core areas.
Holds and actively manages controlling stakes in listed companies: it built Strathcona Resources (now listed on the TSX) and bought a majority of Greenfire Resources in 2024.

Reasons that work in interviews
4 reasons for Waterous Energy Fund
Infrastructure and energy assets need refinancings, construction periods and asset recycling, so there is always work on an existing asset even when nothing new is being bought. That is a better “why infra” than stability or inflation protection, and it answers the hidden question about whether a junior will be busy.
Concentrated control positions rather than diversified minority stakes, which is an unusually high-conviction model and means deep involvement per asset.
Founded by a senior investment banker, so the firm's approach is transaction-led in a way most PE firms are not.
Took a major portfolio company public, which is a concrete and verifiable demonstration of the strategy working.
Small team running large Canadian oil assets: responsibility per person is high.

How juniors get in
Very small Calgary team that hires associates after about three years of investment banking; no analyst or student roles are listed and the site has no careers page.
Green: evidence it does. Struck through: evidence it doesn’t. Dashed: no public evidence either way.
